SUBSTATION TECHNICIAN
Division: Electric

The Substation Technician assists the Substation Supervisor in the supervision
and coordination of substation activities and personnel involved in the construction,
maintenance and operation of NBU’s transmission lines and substations.
The Technician will be responsible for assisting field crews, overseeing contractor
crews and assisting with the daily operations of the substations as directed
by the Substation Supervisor.
- Troubleshoot and/or repair AC and DC control circuits using
the appropriate test equipment
-
Patrol, inspect and report on substation and transmission line conditions
-
Read and comprehend electrical substation diagrams, maps, blueprints
and distribution system drawings, technical equipment operation and maintenance
manuals
-
Assemble, install and/or dismantle of all substation related equipment
including but not limited to transformers, regulators, switching and
metering equipment, relay and control equipment, wire and tubular buss,
grounding equipment, steel poles and A-Frames and assist with the installation
and construction of equipment foundations and structures, the installation
of conduit and control cable

Install, program and/or trouble shoot SCADA Remote Terminal Units

Assist the Substation Supervisor with overseeing and inspecting work
performed by outside contractors

Execute switching orders as directed by supervisors and/or Transmission
System Operators

Work in close proximity of high voltage lines and equipment
-
Responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of all tools and safety equipment
furnished by NBU
-
Perform general house keeping, routine maintenance and monthly visual
inspection of each substation’s network and equipment and update
appropriate log sheets
- High school diploma or GED required or demonstrate equivalent
skills and knowledge thru additional work experience.
-
Five years of experience in electric distribution line and/or substation
construction
-
Demonstrate knowledge of current national electrical codes used in the
electric utility industry.

Demonstrate knowledge of electrical fundamentals, including 3-phase metering,
current and potential circuits and KYZ outputs.
-
Ability to identify or learn the different types of relays and their
functions.
-
Ability to quickly learn NBU’s electrical system and circuitry.
-
Ability to read electrical plans, blueprints, distribution system and
substation drawings.
-
Ability to become a knowledgeable user of the SCADA Master terminal.
-
Ability to take and understand switching orders from Transmission System
Operators and/or supervisor.
-
Strong sense of urgency, personal initiative and able to work effectively
under extreme deadlines and changing priorities without close supervision.

Class ‘A’ Commercial Driver’s License is required within
12 months of employment.
- Ten years of experience in electric distribution line and/or
substation construction.

Completion of specialized and advance training in electrical distribution
systems, including constructions, operations and maintenance
-
Understands the different types of relays and their functions.
-
Knowledgeable of NBU’s electrical system, circuitry and SCADA Master
Terminal.
Environmental and/or Physical Demands
|
- The employee will be required to work outdoors and engage
in activities such as squatting, sit, stand, walk, twist, lifting, bending,
reaching, kneeling, pushing, pulling and climbing of ladders, lattice
structures and/or equipment, working in awkward positions, perform strenuous
labor, requires the occasional use of heavy tools, equipment and materials.

Outdoor environment may result in working conditions which include undesirable
weather conditions, pet/insect hazards, mechanical/electrical/chemical
hazards, confined spaces, poison ivy, and excessive noise, odors, and
fumes.

The nature of the job requires the employee to be near high voltage equipment
which can result in explosive hazards.

Will be required to carry a pager
-
Flexibility in available hours, including holidays, weekends, and/or
after hours, is required.
