SAFEhaven Coloring Contest winners announced

NEW BRAUNFELS—Four area school children were recently selected as the winners of the second annual SAFEhaven coloring book contest. The four competed with their peers for the chance to win a Domino’s Pizza Party for their entire class as well as one free pizza a month for a year!

Entries were available in SAFEhaven coloring books that were passed out during each Chuck & Bucky show this past fall. This program is designed to teach children that NBU personnel can help them in an emergency if a parent, police officer or fireman cannot be found. NBU employee Chuck Reininger has headlined the show for 20 years. Bucky the Bucket Truck (manned by Mike Wiley) is his puppet sidekick who assists with the educational program. As part of the SAFEhaven coloring book contest, children in grades kindergarten through 3rd were asked to draw their own interpretation of Bucky the Bucket Truck.

The winner in the kindergarten division was Savannah Walser of Goodwin Primary. Erika Emmons from Comal Elementary was named the winner in the first grade division. Bailey Maxwell of Sts. Peter & Paul School will treat her classmates to pizza for the second year in a row as she was named the winner of the second grade division. Bailey won the first grade division last year. Frazier Elementary student Zachary Pfeil rounded out the list of winners by topping the third grade division.

“With over 225 entries, the judges had a very tough time making their decisions,” NBU Communications Manager Gretchen Reuwer says. “There is no doubt that we have a tremendous number of talented young artists in our community.

“More importantly, however, we hope that by presenting the program in the schools and sending the coloring books home, parents were provided an opportunity to discuss safety with their children,” Reuwer says. “NBU drivers and crews have a direct connection to city police and emergency response teams. It’s sort of like having an extra set of friendly eyes and ears watching out for you. If your kids come home talking about Chuck, it’s a great opportunity for you to discuss safety in your neighborhood, school and home.”
