NBU receives national award for community service
SEATTLE, WASH.— New Braunfels Utilities received the American Public Power
Association’s (APPA) Community Service Award on June 22 during the association’s
National Conference in Seattle, Washington. This award recognizes “good neighbor”
activities that demonstrate the commitment of the utility and its employees
to the community.
NBU was recognized for its safety awareness efforts through various SAFEhaven
programs targeted to schools, the home, and the community. The programs are
volunteer employee projects designed to promote the health, vitality, and safety
of the community. Projects have included school-based programs with messages
delivered to more than 3,500 children annually, winter blanket and fan drives,
bike rodeos, and participation in a lighting safety oriented National Night
Out. The SAFEhaven initiative provides a sustained level of volunteerism to
fulfill community needs.
Since the program’s inception in 2001, SAFEhaven volunteers have donated over
2,000 hours of their time to SAFEhaven community service projects.
APPA is the Washington, D.C.-based service organization representing the nation’s
more than 2,000 community- and state-owned public power systems. Since 1940,
it has provided services to ensure reliable electricity at a reasonable price,
promoted proper protection of the environment, and advanced the public policy
interests of its members and their consumers.
