NEW BRAUNFELS—Employees at New Braunfels Utilities reached a safety milestone on Friday, July 23 by working 1.5 million hours without a lost-time accident. The achievement marks an ongoing commitment from NBU employees to make safety a top priority in their work environment.

NBU provides both safety and health programs for its employees throughout the year. In addition, an employee-appointed Safety Committee conducts safety inspections, reviews safety policies and procedures and reviews work conditions. An Accident Review Board evaluates any incidents that do occur on the job site and recommends policy or procedure changes as needed. Safety Coordinator Veronica Carter oversees the education and training of employees and monitors safety and health standards throughout the company.

“Safety and proficiency go hand in hand,” Carter points out. “Everyone has a responsibility to promote a safe work environment. Our employees have embraced their role in this effort and the result has been an extremely important accomplishment.”

NBU employees achieved a safety record of 1 million safe hours on April 23, 2003. The latest milestone of 1.5 million safe hours on July 23, 2004 marks the first time since safety records have been maintained that NBU employees have reached this goal.

“Extensive training in performing jobs safely and effectively has proved to be extremely beneficial for both our employees and our company in general,” Executive Director of Customer & Employee Services Judy Waring explains. “Our next goal is 2 million safe man-hours and we hope to continue on from there.”
