NBU NEWS RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: April 3, 2006
Contact: Gretchen Reuwer, NBU Communications Manager, (830) 629-8486

Dry conditions could mean return to water restrictions

NEW BRAUNFELS—The possibility of a return of additional water restrictions for NBU customers is coming closer to reality the longer the current weather conditions persist. New Braunfels Mayor Bruce Boyer can impose Stage I watering restrictions when the J-17 well reading is at or below 650 feet or if the Comal spring flow is at or below 250 cubic feet per second (cfs), whichever comes first. The Comal spring flow was 253 cfs on Thursday, March 8 with only slim chances of rain predicted for the next week. The latest watering guidelines can be accessed 24-hours a day by calling the NBU Information Line at (830) 608-8925.

“In our current weather conditions, it does not take long to reach critical period management levels at which time additional restrictions would be implemented,” explains NBU Communications Manager Gretchen Reuwer. “We ask that New Braunfels residents continue in their efforts to conserve water to help mitigate the effects of the dry weather and delay additional restrictions.”

As part of New Braunfels’ year round conservation ordinance, landscape watering is prohibited between the hours of 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. except using a hand held hose, bucket, soaker hose (that does not spray water in the air) or drip irrigation system. If Stage I restrictions are implemented, the following will apply for all NBU water customers:

  • Landscape watering using a sprinkler or irrigation system is permitted two days per week according to the street address as follows:
  • If the last digit of the address ends in 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8, irrigation days are Monday and Thursday.
  • If the last digit of the address ends in 1, 3, 5, 7 or 9, irrigation days are Tuesday and Friday.
  • Landscape watering is permitted to maintain adequate growth of newly installed plants, generally three weeks. Property owners should submit by mail, fax or e-mail to the NBU Conservation Coordinator their name, address where the new landscape is to be installed, and the date of installation in order to receive a confirmation letter from NBU. The fax number is (830) 608-8998 and e-mails should be addressed to Suzanne Williams. After three weeks, landscape watering is permitted only on designated watering days and times.
  • Watering with a hand-held hose, soaker hose (that does not spray water in the air), five-gallon bucket or drip irrigation system is permitted at any time on any day.
  • Vehicle washing at home is allowed on assigned residential watering days and times, but is prohibited between the hours of 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. every day. This must be on a pervious surface, such as a lawn, using a hand held hose with an automatic shutoff nozzle and/or a bucket. Vehicle washing at commercial car wash facilities is allowed any time.
  • Outside fountains and waterfalls are prohibited.

Residents should be aware that violations of watering restrictions could result in stiff penalties. If a violator is reported to NBU, the following actions can occur:

First violation in any 12 month period Warning
Second violation in any 12 month period $25.00
Third violation in any 12 month period $100.00
Fourth violation in any 12 month period $300.00

Residents will be kept informed of water restrictions through the local media and on the NBU web site at www.nbutexas.com. NBU also will be mailing water conservation and usage guides in upcoming bills. These are also available for free at the Main Office located at 263 E. Main Plaza.

“New Braunfels residents have always been very responsible when it comes to our water resources. Sometimes, people are simply not aware of the restrictions and a single letter will help inform them of the situation and gain their cooperation,” Reuwer says. “The year-round conservation measures that are in place and the Drought Management Plan are designed to encourage the awareness of water use that is necessary for the health and welfare of our customers and business economy versus water use that is not considered essential. It helps ensure an adequate water supply not only for today, but for the long-term future as well.”
