Safety Tip: Don’t
be “Like Mike”
NEW BRAUNFELS, TX—In the summer movie, “Like Mike,” which opened July 3, the
film’s child star comes dangerously close to electrical power lines during a rainstorm.
NBU reminds children and their parents to stay away from electric lines and
facilities and never throw objects into power lines or attempt to get them down
if they become entangled in power lines. Children need to understand that the
actions in movies are make-believe scenes that can have severe and even deadly
results if attempted in real life.
“Hollywood might
have intended for this to be purely entertaining, but power lines are serious
business,” says NBU Electric Superintendent John Green. “
Please make sure that your children understand that power lines are
dangerous and they need to stay away.”
Power lines often carry thousands of volts of electricity.
When someone touches or comes close to a wire—either directly or with any
material that conducts electricity such as poles, sticks, or even kites
attached to strings—they can suffer serious injury or death.
Only trained professionals who have the proper safety
equipment should only handle power lines, transformers and other electric
facilities. If you have questions or concerns about electric safety, please
call the NBU Electric Division at 608-8873.
