The SAFEhaven Kinderschuhe 5K Run/Walk was held on Saturday, April 19 and proved to be a step in the right direction. Over 226 runners and walkers participated in the event to help raise funds for Communities in Schools of New Braunfels to purchase shoes for area low-income school children.

NBU is a municipally-owned utility providing electricity, water and wastewater services to over 28,000 customers in New Braunfels and the surrounding area. In addition to providing essential services of comfort, productivity and progress in the community, NBU employees also sponsor SAFEhaven. SAFEhaven programs are volunteer employee projects of NBU designed to promote the health and vitality of the community and the safety and comfort of its residents. NBU learned from Communities in Schools that new shoes are a big expense for low-income families and an area where the utility might be able to help out through its SAFEhaven program.

A number of local businesses partnered with NBU to help provide the products and services needed to make it so successful. These included Great American Products, Payless Shoe Source, Librado’s Mexican Restaurant, New Braunfels Smokehouse, Sonic Drive-In, McDonald’s, Landa Park Railroad, Chick-Fil-A, and the New Braunfels Running Club.
