New Braunfels Utilities is declaring today, August 2, as an Energy Action Day. High temperatures coupled with high humidity forecasted throughout the week, have prompted NBU to ask for energy conservation measures. New Braunfels Utilities anticipates an increased demand for electricity throughout the week. Customers can help decrease energy demand on Energy Action Days, which will help to save energy and money during peak-demand events.

When NBU declares an Energy Action Day, we are asking customers to voluntarily take steps to help conserve energy. There are practical ways that you can conserve energy between 3:00 – 7:00 pm. and help reduce electricity demand. One important reason to conserve electricity on Energy Action Days is because NBU is monitoring conditions to target days when a Peak Demand Day will be forecasted. The measurement is calculated based upon system demands coinciding with the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) system peak demand during the months of June, July, August, and September.  Once confirmed, the Peak Demand days that were metered during the summer months are averaged and used as the peak kilowatt rate for the entire next calendar year, beginning with the January bill.

Reducing electric load during the peak demand measurement will save money for the next year when the new demand readings go into effect. Taking the recommended conservation steps to reduce energy usage during Energy Action Days will benefit customers as ERCOT measures power consumption during peak demand events.

When extreme temperatures cause strain on the electric grid – you can take action!

Here are some tips to help you lower your energy use at home:

  • Set the thermostat two to three degrees higher;
    set programmable thermostats to higher temperatures when no one is home.
  • Use fans to feel four to six degrees cooler.
  • Set pool pumps to run early morning or overnight; shut them off from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m.
  • Avoid using large appliances (i.e. ovens, washing machines, etc.).
  • Ensure doors and windows are sealed properly.  Any light through the door indicates a penetration of air coming into the home.
  • Turn off lights, computers, and other electronic devices whenever possible.
