{"id":3229,"date":"2020-05-26T11:21:34","date_gmt":"2020-05-26T16:21:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/live-nbu.pantheonsite.io\/?page_id=3229"},"modified":"2025-05-20T13:29:13","modified_gmt":"2025-05-20T18:29:13","slug":"rock-berm-policy","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.nbutexas.com\/es\/rock-berm-policy\/","title":{"rendered":"Rock Berm Policy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Item No. 639<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rock Berm<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>639.1\u00a0 Description<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This item shall govern the construction of a temporary berm of open graded rock that is installed at the toe of a slope on the perimeter of a developing area.\u00a0 The purpose of a rock berm is to intercept sediment-laden water from unprotected areas, to retain the sediment and to release the water in sheet flow.\u00a0 This item shall also govern the removal of the &#8220;Rock Berm&#8221; and re-vegetation of the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>639.2\u00a0 Submittals<\/strong>The submittal requirements for this specification item shall include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A. Function (stream flow or other) and dimensions of the rock berm<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>B. Source, type and gradation of rock<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>C. Re-vegetation program, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1.\u00a0 Identification of the type, source, mixture,\u00a0Pure\u00a0Live Seed (PLS) and rate of application of the seeding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2.\u00a0 \u00a0 Type of mulch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3.\u00a0 \u00a0 Type of tacking agent<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>.4.\u00a0 \u00a0 Type and rate of application of fertilizer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>639.3\u00a0 Design Criteria<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A rock berm shall be constructed near the perimeter of a disturbed site within the development area. It is not to be constructed outside the property lines without obtaining an easement or written permission from the affected adjacent property owners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A detailed design is not required for the installation of a rock berm; however, the following criteria shall be observed:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Drainage area &#8211;\u00a0 less than 5 acres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Height\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 &#8211;\u00a0 18 inches\u00a0 minimum height, measured vertically from the top of the existing ground at the upslope toe to the top of the berm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Top width\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 &#8211; \u00a02 feet minimum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Side slopes\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 &#8211;\u00a0 2:1 or flatter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Grade\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 &#8211;\u00a0 Berms will be built along a contour as near possible to a 0 percent grade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>639.4\u00a0 Materials<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Surplus rock excavated from utility trenches or from other excavations may be used in construction of these berms.\u00a0 In general, the rocks shall be sound with a minimum of 3 inches in smallest dimension and shall weigh between 10 and 30 pounds each.\u00a0 Seeding for re-vegetation shall conform to, &#8220;Seeding for Erosion Control&#8221;.Use only open-graded rock of the size indicated on Standard Detail, with most of the fines removed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>639.5 Construction Methods<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All trees, brush, stumps and objectionable material shall be removed and disposed in a manner that will not interfere with the construction of the berm.A trench shall be excavated to a minimum depth of 4 inches below existing grade for placement of the rock as indicated on Standard Detail and the Drawings.\u00a0 The rocks shall be placed in interlocking layers with close joints starting at the base.\u00a0 Open joints shall be filled with rock-spalled materials as required to stabilize the berm.The area upstream from the rock berm shall be maintained in a condition, which will allow sediment to be removed following the runoff from a rainfall event. After each rainfall event with an accumulation of 1 inch or more, an inspection of the rock berm will be made by the Contractor and the stone shall be replaced, when the structure ceases to function as intended because of silt accumulation among the rocks, washout, construction traffic damage, etc.When the silt reaches a depth equal to 1\/3 the height of the berm or 6 inches, whichever is less, the Contractor will remove the accumulated silt and dispose of it at an approved disposal site in a manner that will not contribute to additional siltation.\u00a0 The berm will be reshaped as needed during construction.\u00a0When the site is completely stabilized, the berm will be removed and disposed of in a manner approved by the Engineer or designated representative.The area will be re-vegetated as required by Item, &#8220;Seeding for Erosion Control&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>639.6 Measurement<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Acceptable work performed and prescribed in this item will be measured by the linear foot along the centerline of top of berm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>639.7\u00a0 Payment<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All work performed by this item will be considered subsidiary to other bid items unless it is included as a separate bid item in the contract documents then all work performed as required herein and measured as provided under &#8220;Measurement&#8221; will be paid for at the unit bid price.\u00a0 The bid prices shall include full compensation for furnishing all labor; all materials; all royalty and freight involved; all hauling and delivering; and all tools, equipment and incidentals necessary to complete the work.\u00a0 Payment will not be made for unauthorized work\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>End<\/strong><br><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Item No. 639 Rock Berm 639.1\u00a0 Description This item shall govern the construction of a temporary berm of open graded\u2026<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"parent":0,"menu_order":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"class_list":["post-3229","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.4 -
