{"id":32571,"date":"2026-05-27T14:26:49","date_gmt":"2026-05-27T19:26:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nbutexas.com\/?p=32571"},"modified":"2026-05-27T14:26:55","modified_gmt":"2026-05-27T19:26:55","slug":"nbu-sanitary-sewer-overflow-guadalupe-river","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nbutexas.com\/es\/nbu-sanitary-sewer-overflow-guadalupe-river\/","title":{"rendered":"New Braunfels Utilities Reports\u00a0Sanitary Sewer Overflow\u00a0into the Guadalupe River\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE<\/span><\/strong><br>Contact: Reagan Pe\u00f1a<br>Director, Enterprise Communication&nbsp;<br>830.312.7979 |&nbsp;<a href=\"mailto:communications@nbutexas.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">communications@nbutexas.com<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas (May 27, 2026) \u2013\u00a0New Braunfels Utilities\u00a0(NBU)\u00a0responded to\u00a0a sanitary sewer\u00a0overflow early Wednesday morning after\u00a0a storm system\u00a0appeared to have\u00a0caused a temporary power outage\u00a0at the Rio\u00a0Bar Screen\u00a0Facility,\u00a0located\u00a0at\u00a0470 Rio Lane.\u00a0The outage resulted in an unauthorized discharge\u00a0of\u00a0an estimated\u00a0550,000\u00a0gallons\u00a0of wastewater\u00a0into the Guadalupe River\u00a0north of Lake Dunlap.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The power outage started&nbsp;around 1 a.m.&nbsp;and&nbsp;was&nbsp;restored at approximately 4 a.m., stopping the wastewater discharge.&nbsp;Once aware of the situation,&nbsp;crews responded&nbsp;immediately&nbsp;to&nbsp;contain&nbsp;the release, minimize environmental&nbsp;impacts&nbsp;and begin cleanup and monitoring efforts. Cleanup activities include disinfecting affected areas and collecting upstream and downstream water samples to verify effective mitigation and support reporting requirements with state regulatory agencies.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>There is no impact&nbsp;on&nbsp;NBU\u2019s drinking water system.&nbsp;<\/strong>We recognize how important our river system is to our community, local&nbsp;businesses&nbsp;and&nbsp;tourism.&nbsp;Based on&nbsp;initial&nbsp;observations, the spill appears to have been significantly diluted by stormwater runoff and river flow conditions.&nbsp;However, all&nbsp;recreational&nbsp;river&nbsp;use should follow local guidelines.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NBU is&nbsp;communicating&nbsp;with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality and following all required reporting and notification procedures related to the incident.&nbsp;Additionally, NBU is&nbsp;coordinating&nbsp;with&nbsp;the City of New Braunfels,&nbsp;neighboring&nbsp;agencies&nbsp;and&nbsp;downstream&nbsp;water&nbsp;purveyors&nbsp;to inform them&nbsp;of the&nbsp;occurrence.&nbsp;&nbsp;<br><br>For more information, view our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbutexas.com\/water-notice-nbu\/\">Water Notice<\/a> page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"># # #<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>About New Braunfels Utilities:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>New Braunfels Utilities (NBU) is a not-for-profit, community-owned provider of electric, water and wastewater services.
