NBU Headquarters Project

Building to Serve Our Community

New Braunfels Utilities is building a new headquarters to better support our customers, employees, and growing community. This project brings administrative offices, customer service, and field operations together in one centralized location designed to support reliable service today and into the future.

The new facility will improve operations and provide space to meet long-term operational needs as New Braunfels continues to grow.

Project Overview

After evaluating more than 30 potential locations, New Braunfels Utilities selected a 77-acre site at 5467 FM 482 near IH-35 and Engel Road. The site was chosen for its accessibility, size, and ability to support long-term operational needs.

Currently, NBU staff operate out of multiple facilities across the service area. The new headquarters will consolidate these locations into a single, purpose-built campus that supports collaboration, efficiency, and customer service.

Project Details

The headquarters campus includes multiple buildings designed to support daily operations and future growth, including an office building, warehouse, equipment building, and maintenance building. These facilities will support electric, water, and wastewater operations while providing space for customer service and administrative functions.

The project incorporates sustainability-focused features, including infrastructure to support future electric vehicle parking and systems to collect and reuse rainwater and HVAC condensate to reduce overall water use.

New Braunfels Utilities has engaged with the community throughout the project. Outreach efforts have included informational meetings, participation in community events, and ongoing communication with nearby neighborhoods to share updates and gather feedback.

Once the new headquarters is complete, the Main Plaza office and FM 306 Service Center properties will be sold to the City of New Braunfels and will be repurposed for future economic development. NBU will continue leasing these spaces from the City during construction.

The headquarters project is funded through utility rates and part of long-term capital planning. Costs related to land acquisition, planning, design, and construction are structured over a 30-year period, aligning with the expected lifespan of the facility. The total estimated lifetime cost of the project is approximately $184 million.

The project originated from a facilities and workforce study that evaluated long-term operational needs. Findings showed that building on existing property would limit future growth within a short time frame. With continued population growth in New Braunfels and limited available land within the service area, securing a site capable of supporting long-term needs became a priority.
