New Braunfels Utilities Moves to Stage 2 Water Conservation
August 10, 2026New Braunfels Utilities (NBU) has transitioned to Conservation Stage 2 effective today, August 10, 2026, under the City of New Braunfels Code of Ordinances as drought conditions continue across the region. Under the ordinance, Mayor French, in consultation with NBU, may adjust water conservation stages as water supply conditions change.
Stage 2 conservation measures are designed to reduce outdoor water use while protecting local water resources, including the Edwards Aquifer and Comal Springs. Although NBU has invested in a diversified water portfolio to meet the community’s long-term needs, responsible water use remains essential to maintaining a reliable water supply during drought conditions.
For most customers, the biggest change is that automatic irrigation systems and sprinklers remain limited to once per week based on the last digit of the service address. Irrigation is permitted only before 10 a.m. and after 8 p.m.
Customers may continue to water with a handheld hose equipped with an automatic shutoff nozzle, bucket, drip irrigation system or non-spraying soaker hose on any day before 10 a.m. or after 8 p.m.
Vehicles may be washed at home only on the property’s assigned watering day using a bucket of five gallons or less or a hose equipped with an automatic shutoff nozzle. Commercial car washes may be used any day.
Decorative fountains and waterfalls that use potable water remain prohibited. Water waste is prohibited year-round and includes allowing water to run into streets or gutters, operating irrigation systems outside permitted days or hours, failing to repair controllable leaks and other unnecessary uses of water.
