New Braunfels Utilities (NBU) recently began work across McQueeney Road as construction continues on the South Kuehler Interceptor Phase 1 project.

Beginning Wednesday, Sept. 23, through Thursday, Oct. 29, drivers can expect an alternating lane closure on McQueeney Road between Northpark Ridge and Walnut Heights Boulevard. One lane will remain open with temporary traffic signals directing vehicles through the work zone, while the other lane will remain closed 24 hours a day for the duration of the work. Drivers should allow extra travel time and use caution when traveling through the area.
This construction is part of a larger project to increase wastewater capacity and improve reliability in the South Kuehler sewer basin. The $8M project includes approximately 6,200 feet of new 36-inch and 42-inch wastewater main, along with approximately 1,000 feet of smaller wastewater lines.

The project will replace and upsize an existing interceptor that is approaching its design capacity, while also replacing an adjacent wastewater interceptor that is in poor condition.

A wastewater interceptor is a large underground pipe that collects wastewater from smaller wastewater lines throughout the community and carries it to a water reclamation facility for treatment. Every time you flush a toilet, take a shower, wash clothes or run the dishwasher, that wastewater travels through the wastewater system.

By replacing and upsizing the interceptor, NBU is making sure the system has enough capacity to convey wastewater safely and reliably, helping reduce the risk of backups and keep service dependable as the community grows.
