The Headwaters at the Comal, New Braunfels Utilities’ conservation legacy project, will celebrate the opening of three new outdoor archaeology exhibits with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 30, at Headwaters at the Comal, 333 E. Klingemann St. in New Braunfels. 

The new exhibits invite visitors to explore more than 8,000 years of human history at the site while expanding educational opportunities focused on conservation, cultural history and stewardship. Visitors can examine replica stone tools uncovered at the site, discover how early inhabitants used earthen ovens to prepare food and follow a timeline that traces the generations of people who have gathered around the springs for thousands of years. 

The exhibits build on Headwaters at the Comal’s mission to preserve and restore an important natural and cultural resource while helping visitors better understand the longstanding connection between people, water and the environment.  

“These exhibits help bring thousands of years of history to life in a way that people can easily explore and understand,” said Nancy Pappas, managing director of Headwaters at the Comal. “We want visitors to walk away knowing a little more about the people who came before us and recognizing that the springs and natural resources we care for today have been important to this community for generations.” 

The three exhibits add another educational component to Headwaters at the Comal, where ecological restoration, water conservation, cultural history and community education come together to help preserve the Comal Springs and surrounding environment for future generations.
