(New Braunfels, TX – May 21, 2025) – New Braunfels Utilities (NBU) has earned the Certificate of Excellence in Reliability from the American Public Power Association (APPA) for its outstanding electric service performance in 2024. The national recognition reflects NBU’s continued efforts to provide safe, efficient and dependable power to the community it serves.
The awards honors utilities with outage data that ranks in the top 25% of all public power providers nationwide. NBU outperformed every utility in its class and region, which include Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri and Louisiana.
“This recognition reflects the peace of mind our customers feel when they flip a switch and the lights come on,” said Mark Steelman, NBU’s Chief Operations Officer. “Our Electric Operations, Substations and Control Center teams work around the clock to keep homes comfortable, businesses running and families safe – whether that means modernizing aging infrastructure or restoring service quickly after an outage.”
Electric reliability refers to how consistently power is available when customers need it. For most customers, it means fewer interruptions, shorter outages and confidence that the lights will come back on quickly when something goes wrong.
NBU is classified in the Class 5 size group, which includes public power utilities with more than 14,528 customer connections. The data submitted to APPA is collected through the U.S. Energy Information Administration and reflects performance in minimizing both the frequency and duration of power outages.
“Year after year, data consistently demonstrate public power utilities provide highly reliable service,” said Paul Zummo, APPA’s Director of Research and Development. “The utilities recognized here are truly elite when it comes to keeping the lights on. Their communities should be proud of the hard work and dedication of their local power providers as they earn this truly deserved recognition.”
The APPA represents more than 2,000 not-for-profit, community-owned electric utilities across the United States.
