Understanding your continuous water use alerts
If you’ve received a notice about a possible leak, you might be wondering what it means and what you should do.
NBU sends you a text when your NBU water meter has detected continuous water use at the address provided in the text. This can happen for normal water use reasons – or it may be a sign of a leak. Either way, it’s worth checking and we’re here to help you save water, prevent damage and avoid higher bills.
Text Example:
“NBU water meter (XXXXXX) for 300 WATER AVE has reported continuous water usage of 0.2 gallons per hour since 10/29/2025. This may indicate a leak. Visit https://www.nbutexas.com/leak-detection/ to learn more.
| Leak Amounts | Likely Indication |
| 2-5 gallons per hour leaked | Toilet flapper |
| 8-30 gallons per hour leaked | Hose left running |
| 20-100 gallons per hour leaked | Underground pipe leak |
| Common Water Use | Amount Used |
| Filling a pool or hot tub | 8-30 gallons per hour (same as hose) |
| Running an Irrigation System | 1,500 gallons per zone, generally in the early morning or late evening |
| Water Softener Regeneration Cycle | 8-30 gallons per hour (same as hose, but only for 1-2 hours) |
